A new donation program will provide more food access to families in need in central Illinois. The University of Illinois Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education recently funded a group of initiatives that includes the Illinois Deer Donation Program Pilot. Coordinators will ask meat processors, hunters, and food pantries in 12 central Illinois counties for donations of deer meat to the Illinois SNAP-Ed program. People utilizing the program will be able to get lean protein and resources and recipes from the Illinois Extension on how to prepare the venison at home.
