Decatur, IL – During the week of April 14 to April 18, the City of Decatur is planning a potential prescribed burn of the City-owned natural area restoration located between Lake Shore Drive and the water’s edge, immediately south of the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. The southernmost (right) lane of eastbound Lake Shore Drive will be closed for approximately 20-30 minutes while the burn occurs.
The prescribed burn will be conducted by trained and experienced professionals. It is designed to decrease invasive species and to encourage the growth of native plants. Care will be taken to ensure safety and minimize smoke from blowing towards homes, roadways, or other smoke-sensitive areas. There are absolutely NO hazardous materials at this site and citizens should not be concerned.
The burn complies with City Code Chapter 48 concerning native plantings and burning by City officials. It also complies with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency as detailed in the Open Burning Permit issued to the City of Decatur. Local authorities and fire officials have been notified the burn will be taking place.
The burn is dependent on favorable weather conditions. We will send communication again when we know the exact dates and time.
