DOJ Launches Civil Rights Investigation Into Sangamon Sheriff’s Office
(Springfield, IL) — The Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office is under investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice. The move comes in the wake of the death of Sonya Massey, who was fatally shot by now-former deputy Sean Grayson back on July 6th. Grayson, who is charged with murder, was responding to a call about a possible intruder outside of Massey’s home when he shot her as she held a pot of boiling water. While the DOJ is investigating the shooting, officials are also looking into “policies, practices, procedures, and training regarding community policing.”
