Michael I. Wallace, 34, of Decatur
Bobby L. Gipson, 34, of Tennessee, formerly of Decatur
On August 4, 2011, at approximately 11:30pm, Caleb Witty, then just 17-years-old, was walking home with his 14-year-old sister after leaving the Decatur Celebration. As they were in the 2200 block of E. Johns, they were confronted by 2 suspects who attempted to rob Caleb and his sister. During this robbery, Caleb took actions to protect his sister, and was subsequently shot twice, once in the arm and once in the chest. The shot to the chest ultimately caused Caleb’s death.
The progress in this case is the result of relentless efforts by our dedicated law enforcement team, significant assistance from the States Attorney’s office, collaboration with state and federal agencies, and invaluable assistance from the community.
These arrests mark a crucial step toward justice for Caleb Witty and hopefully bring a measure of solace to his family and friends who have endured years of uncertainty and grief. Caleb Witty was a young man simply trying to enjoy an evening at the Decatur Celebration with his sister. And he was murdered for nothing. Words cannot even describe the senselessness of this crime. His untimely death was a profound loss that left a deep void in the hearts of those who knew him.
Today’s arrests represent the Decatur Police Department’s unwavering commitment to seeking justice for Caleb and holding accountable those responsible for this heinous crime, as well as all victims of violent crimes.
While we recognize that these arrests do not bring Caleb back, we hope they provide a sense of resolution and a step toward healing for all who have been affected by this tragedy. We remain steadfast in our commitment to seeking justice and ensuring the safety and well-being of our community.
