Illinois House Republicans are calling for the repeal of a criminal justice reform bill signed into law last year. House Republican leader Jim Durkin blasted the SAFE-T Act, blaming it for why a Chicago man wasn’t charged with murder for his role in a shootout that left one bystander dead. The Chicago Sun-Times reported this week that a Cook County grand jury declined to indict Travis Andrews for the murder of Melinda Crump, who was killed in a shootout initiated by Andrews. Republican lawmakers have filed legislation to repeal the SAFE-T Act.
