A southern Illinois lawmaker is filing a bill that would reinstate the death penalty as a punishment for killing a police officer. Republican Dave Severin of Benton is filing House Bill 4746, saying he’s seen enough violence against police. The legislation would restore capital punishment for the first-degree murder of a peace officer killed while performing his or her official duties. Multiple officers have been killed in the state over the last month.
