The Good Samaritan Inn is hosting its annual Empty Bowl event on November 10th, with proceeds feeding hungry children and families seven days a week. As more Macon County residents face food insecurity, Good Sam’s Noon Meal program not only nourishes but also helps patrons save money for necessities including rent, childcare, and utilities. “It helps – I have a huge family so my power bill is always high,” says Tonya, who frequents the lunch program. “It helps me pay my phone bill monthly,” adds Branson, another diner.
Event attendees can purchase a $5 meal and dine-in or take it to-go for the whole family. The menu features 2021 Culinary Cookoff winner LP’s BBQ Pit’s “Smoked Piggy Mac” as well as last year’s crowd-favorite Southwest Braised Turkey & White Bean Chili by Good Samaritan Inn Chef Nate Brohard. Diners can finish off their dinner with a dessert from Wildflour Bakery and enjoy music from long-time Good Sam volunteer and local musician Tracy Osborne.
A huge draw to the event is $10 ceramic artisan bowls handmade by local artists, with the majority coming from Millikin University’s Art Department. “Our students spend countless hours crafting these bowls because they are passionate about helping others,” says Jennifer Holt, Assistant Professor of Ceramics & Sculpture. “Students not only further develop their craft, but also learn how to use their artistic skills to positively impact the community.”
This year a new partnership with Macon Resources, Inc. (MRI) is sure to bring a new, joyful selection of bowls to the event. “This is a great opportunity for members of our program to demonstrate their talents while supporting the integral work of The Good Samaritan Inn,” says Amy Bliefnick, President/CEO of MRI. Students from St. Teresa high school are also partnering with local artist Michael Holmberg, a Millikin Alum, to glaze and fire his bowls. Good Samaritan Inn Executive Director Nicky Besser is an alum of St. Teresa.
“It is truly a community event,” says Besser. “Every year new partners emerge to make it the most fun and successful event to-date. Of course, we are most grateful for the Macon County community that has supported us for almost 40 years. Every bowl counts.”
The Empty Bowl is on Wednesday, November 10th, 2021 from 4:30pm-7pm at The Good Samaritan Inn. Community members can pre-order or pay in-person and eat-in or take it to go for the whole family. Businesses can participate in a delivered office lunch on Tuesday, November 9th, 2021. Sponsorships are available and donations are accepted.
