On Sunday, September 12, Coziahr Harley Davidson will host the 13th annual “Cruise 11 to Remember 9-11” event. The event recognizes the 20th anniversary of the 9-11 tragedy. Cruise 11 was created in memory of Pvt John Gifford. Gifford worked at ADM when 9-11 took place and later quit his job and joined the Marines. He was the first Illinois casualty in Operation Iraqi Freedom, when he was killed in action on March 23, 2003, at age 30.
ALL vehicles (cars-new to antique, trucks, motorcycles) of any type and year are encouraged to participate. Ayn Owens, event creator says “13 years ago when I created the event, I really wanted to give the public, especially our car show people, a way to show off their vehicles that would be unique and fun and carry the spirit of saluting our heroes. Essentially, remember the tragic events of 9-11 and those we lost and those that continue to serve.” “It is important that we recognize the daily contributions of our first responders and troops,” she continues. The 2021 event will be Covid friendly.
The first 100 get a free magnetic dash plaque courtesy of Dynagraphics. All vehicles will be given the traditional yellow ribbon to display during the optional 11-mile cruise following the awards. Entries should meet at the former O’Charlie’s to register beginning at 8:00am. Judging by Veterans and First responders will take place at noon and awards at 2pm. Diggity Dogs food truck will be there with their specialty hot dogs.
There is an $11 entry fee. All donations given will go to a MacArthur High School scholarship fund set up to honor MHS 1964 graduate Doug Hagen—a Vietnam Veteran that was KIA and posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. The annual $500 scholarship in honor of Doug’s service and leadership will be awarded to a MHS senior. Checks should be made out to DPS Foundation memo Hagen Fund. Hagen’s picture is on the dash plaque and poster.
