The Decatur Public Schools Board of Education is considering changing the name of Parsons Elementary School. District officials discussed the issue at its regular meeting yesterday. Parsons is merging with Stevenson Elementary, which requires a committee to consider nominations for the newly formed school’s name. Parsons is named after James B. Parsons, the first African American U.S. District Court Judge with tenure. The judge attended Decatur schools and often returned to the elementary school to meet with students and answer questions about his life. School Board President Beth Nolan says the naming committee will follow policy and take input from students, staff, and the community.
