The History of the Heartland committee has partnered with Skip Huston of the Avon Theatre to provide a rare opportunity for the public to view the unique historical movie, “Our Decatur-1955” on Thursday August 13th. “This is the closest thing you will ever find to a real time machine! The Avon Theater, through some very fortunate circumstances, has the ONLY copy of this hour-long movie about Decatur businesses in 1955!” says Huston.
The movie showcases many well remembered but long-gone businesses in Decatur, as the movie features scenes of downtown Decatur during a different time. The committee says the movie is a fitting event for Historic Preservation Week in Decatur. “We are honored and delighted that Skip agreed to provide such a great event. It’s really a perfect venue and a perfect film for the occasion,” says committee member Bret Robertson.
The Avon theatre opened November 28, 1916. It was one of the most lavish theatres in the city, and it incorporated what then was a bold design focused solely on showing “motion pictures” at a time when some thought that movies would be a passing phase. The Avon went through a long period of slow decline into the 1980s, when it closed. In 1999, it reopened under the leadership of Skip Huston, who has sustained and revitalized the theatre over the last two decades.
Only the first 50 people (no tickets required) will be admitted as the Avon Theatre continues to honor the State pandemic social distancing guidelines. The legendary Avon popcorn will be available for purchase during the showing. Attendees will need to wear a mask and honor social distancing guidelines.
